SmartStripping a Bologna

Near the city of Bologna SmartStripping® was applied with three different lay-out on sites with similar underground conditions: shallow aquifer in alluvial deposits with medium-low permeability, average groundwater depth at 3 m from ground level and average aquifer thickness of about 6 m. Groundwater contaminated by chlorinated compounds with concentrations up to 18,000 μg/l for trichlorethylene, 7,000 μg/l for tetrachlorethylene and 27,000 μg/l for 1,2 dichloroethylene.

The SmartStripping® plant SS1 consisted in one well (link to the explanation of how SmartStripping is made https://www.ecosurvey.it/come-funziona-smartstripping/).

The SmartStripping® plant SS2 consisted in one well (link to the explanation of how SmartStripping is made https://www.ecosurvey.it/come-funziona-smartstripping/) implemented with three suction wells.

The SmartStripping® plant SS3 consisted in one well (link to the explanation of how SmartStripping is made https://www.ecosurvey.it/come-funziona-smartstripping/) added near a P&T well to accelerate the decontamination of groundwater in a low permeability underground.

Environmental benefits

Despite the not optimal operating conditions (low permeability and heterogeneous soils), in two years of activity the three SmartStripping® extracted from groundwater about 250 kg of contaminants with the following environmental benefits:

Volume of groundwater depurated and preserved in the aquifer: about 9.000.000 liters;

Volume of air flow treated and not released into the atmosphere: about 2.350.000 m3.
